December 2023 Book Club Selection-Thomas S. Kidd, PATRICK HENRY, Basic Books, 2011.Patrick Henry was one of the important early American patriots. He was a well known orator wo said “Give me liberty or give me death.” He served several times as a Governor of Virginia. His biography tells why he voted against the constitution.

Mid-November 2023 Book Club Selection-Alex Bermudez, ESSENTIALS OF LEADERSHIP, –,2022. If you are looking for a book to guide your everyday activities as a leader, this is the guidebook for you. This book addresses your people skills, your state of mind, your responsibilities, your accountability and self mastery.

November 2023 Book Club Selection-John C. Maxwell, THINKING FOR A CHANGE, Warner Business Books, 2003. This is another excellent book by Maxwell. The book helps you address your thinking style and guides you to new ones. the styles discussed include big-picture thinking, focused thinking, creative thinking, shared thinking and reflective thinking.

Mid-October 2023 Book Club Selection-Richard Farson and Ralph Keyes, WHOEVER MAKES THE MOST MISTAKES WINS, The Free Press, 2002. Leaders need to be risk takers. This means that leaders will face many successes as well as failures. The authors argue that leaders will learn much from their failures as they learn from their successes..

October 2023 Book Club Selection- Patrick Lencioni, THE 6 TYPES OF WORKING GENIUS, Matt Holt Books, 2022. This book presents a model for the types of work that brings joy to workers and avoids work that leads to frustration and burnout. AS usual for Lencioni, he uses a story to present his new moclel.

Mid-September 2023 Book Club Selection Richard P. Rumelt, THE CRUX, Public Affairs, 2022, This is an advanced textbook on strategy and strategic planning. Leaders become effective strategists when they focus on challenges rather than goals. They pinpoint the crux of their pivotal challenge and then take decisive , coherent action to overcome it.

September 2023 Book Club Selection-John C. Maxwell, THE LEADERSHIP HANDBOOK , Nelson Books, 2008. This book brings 26 leadership truths to light. Maxwell’s truths are based on his personal leadership experiences and results of his daily readings of leadership books and articles. Each critical truth also present a mentoring moment as well as application exercises.

Mid-August Book Club Selection-Jon Gordon and Damon West, HOW TO BE A COFFEE BEAN, Wiley, 2023. This book is a follow p book on their positive psychology approach using the symbol of the coffee bean. The authors present 111 life-changing ways to create positive change. Each page of the book presents a sentence long change.

August 2023 Book Club Selection-Harlow Giles Unger, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, De Capo Press, 2012. This is a continuing exploration of leadership of American Presidents. As Preident ,John Quincy was mostly in- effective. His real success as a leader occurred in his post-presidency role as a representative in Congress. This is an excellent biography.

Mid-July 2023 Book Club Selection- Andy Slavitt, PREVENTABLE, St., Martin’s Press. 2021. What really happened during 2020 which was the first year of the Covid 19 pandemic. It is easy to forget the details of the pandemic experience Slavitt provides the details in this fascinating account of where leaders went wrong.

July 2023 Book Club Selection-John C. Maxwell, DEVELOPING THE LEADER WITHIN YOU 2.0, Harper Collins Leadership, 2018.This classic book was written over twenty-five years ago and has been recently updated. Maxwell argued that leaders were made and not born, Leadership is discussed in terms of influence, setting priorities , and developing character. Leaders must address change and solving problems. Other issues include attitude, serving people. developing vision self=discipline. and concerns with personal growth.

Mid-June 2023 Book Club Selection-Brian C. Castrucci, Geprges Benjamin, Grace G. Ramiriz, and Grace Castillo, PUBLIC HEALTH UNDER SIEGE, APHA Press, 2021. This is a book of twenty-five short papers about public health policy. The book includes papers on the differences of policy at he staye and local levels. The book also reviews existing policy tools and frameworks. .Advocacy issues are discussed. An interesting portion of the book explores improving policy in turbulent times Case studies are also presenred.

June 2023 Book Club Selection= Walter Isaacson, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: AN AMERICAN LIFE, Simon and Schuster2003. This selection continues my recommendations of the leadership of America’s Founding Fathers. Benjamin Franklin lived a long life and participated in many events that affected our early history. This is an excellent and comprehensive biography.

Mid-May2023 Book Club Selection=Perry M. Smith and Jeffrey W’ Foley, RULES AND TOOLS FOR LEADERS(4TH EDITION); Perigee,2013. With an increasing number of leadership books; a series of rules; tools and words have developed to guide leaders in their leadership activities. The book offer insights and useful advice that is meant to avoid flavor of the month management theories that are long on speculation and short on practical applications. This book helps leaders develop their own skills for running organizations.

May 2023 Book Club Selection-Arthur Young and Dave Ulrich, REINVENTING THE ORGANIZATION, Harvard Business Review , 2019. The traditional hierarchical organization is gone. The authors view reinvention at a number of American and Chinese organizations. As changes in technology occur, our business organizations must also change. This book looks at how some of these organizations reinvent themselves. The authors explain how to build a new kind of organization- a market-oriented ecosystem.

Mid-April 2023 Book Club Selection- John C. Maxwell , YOUR ROAD MAP FOR SUCCESS, Nelson, 2002. Maxwell teaches you the practical principles that will prepare you to plan your own success journey. Maxwell also gives you a number of short forms to help you on your journey.

April 2023 Book Club Selection-John C. Maxwell,THE 21 IREREFUTABLE LAWS OF LEADERSHIP, Nelson,1998. During April 2023, we will be highlighting two of the books by a major training speaker and writer on leadership-John Maxwell. This first book by Maxwell is now a classic. From his own experience with over thirty years of work, Maxwell presents 21 rules of laws related to leadership. This is an excellent book which all my readers will find useful

Mid-March 2023 Book Club Selection- Geoff Colvin, HUMANS ARE UNDERRATED, Penguin, 2016. Technology is changing, Computers are impacting our lives in ways we could not have imagined. These machines are doing things that we used to do. The skills that we need lies in our deepest human abilities—empathy, creativity, social sensitivity, storytelling, humor, relationship-building and expressing ourselves with greater power.

March 2023 Book Club Selection- James Clear ATOMIC HABITS , Avery, 2018 .No matter the personal goals that we have, the author tells you how to get 1% better every day. The book provides you with the tools and techniques that you will need to transform your habits. Your major goal as a professional is to change bad habits into good habits.

Mid-February 2023 Book Club Selection-Leana Wen, LIFELINES, Henry Holt, 2021. This is a very interesting memoir of Dr. Wen who is a Chinese American physician who has spent the majority of her career as a public health physician. She has also been a big city public health department director. She recently was a CNN reporter on the pandemic.

February 2023 Book Club Selection-Harlow Giles Unger, THE LAST FOUNDING FATHER, Da Capo Press 2009. This is one of my reviews of the Founding Fathers. This biography covers the life of President James Monroe and his Monroe Doctrine. He knew all the other Founding Fathers who were Presidents before him. Monroe was a strong leader and effective during his years as President. as well as during most of his adult years.

Mid-January2023 Book Club Selection-Michael Ruhl Frank,AXIOMS ON LEADERSHIP, author published, 2019. This is an interesting book that serves as a guide for beginning Leaders.. Leaders need to learn leadership be doing and if possible learn with a mentor, You learn how management and leadership are related. Leadership is faced with challenges and you need guidance in facing these challenges. The book ends with 12 axioms that will guide your work. An axiom is a statement that is taken to be true and serves as a premise or starting point for additional analyses or reas

January 2023 Book Club Selection-Steven Synder, LEADERSHIP AND THE ART OF STRUGGLE, Berrett-Koehler, 2013. Leadership is often an unexpected struggle. All leaders face adversity although not all leaders thrive in it. This book explores our blind spots and how we deal with them. How do leaders become grounded, explore new pathways and deepen adaptive energy. Numerous case studies are presented.
